Hot Tropics: A Week of Fun in the Sun
Starting Friday, Feb 17 and continuing to Saturday, Feb. 25
960 W 31st St, Chicago
We’re having a heat wave,
A tropical heat wave,
The temperature’s rising,
It isn’t surprising,
She certainly can can-can.
– Heatwave by Irving Berlin
While we all expectantly await with anticipation for the end of the winter doldrums and the beginning of warmer and longer days, Maria’s and Kimski will be offering a week-long series of activities and events calculated to energize your spirits (with the right type of spirits) and warm up your blue funk (with plenty of funky fiery rhythms). We will transform our neighborhood watering hole into a torrid tropical hideaway, an island oasis and a relaxing retreat for our urban beachcombers and castaways. So, to enliven and enhance this sense of renewed invigoration and energy, we invite you to join us for Hot Tropics: A Week of Fun in the Sun from Friday, February 17 until Saturday, February 25.
To cool off your palette and put you in the proper festive summery mood, Maria’s expert mixologists have concocted some tasty exotic Tiki cocktails that were calling our “Sipping Safari”.

Daily list of events:
Friday, Feb. 17 – Super Pina Collider, DJ Sol Sun
Hot Tropics kicks off with the release of Super Pina Collider from Marz at 6 PM
The black and tan has been done before, but what about tan and black? Marz Community Brewing Co and Pipeworks Brewing used science and math to reverse the poles! Marz made a Black Berliner Weisse and added 150# of pineapple chunks to the fermenter. Pipeworks brewed a White Stout with coconut. This special collaboration brew was meant to be poured into the same glass together or enjoyed on their own. You decide. Coconuts float on pineapples.
Bottles of each brewery’s Super Piña Collider will be available for purchase in the bottle shop. During the kick off of Hot TropicsMaria’s will be serving drafts pours of the Super Duper Piña Collider Black and Tan served in a glass tiki mug. Mahalo!
We will also be featuring DJ Sol Sun that evening showcasing some burning sounds from Brazil, Latin America and also including a diverse selection of breezy seventies Hawaiian disco and funk that until recently never made it to the mainland. This curious hybrid incorporated the influx of American rock and roll that flew across the waters when Hawaii achieved statehood with a soulful blend of jazz fusion and funk heavily influenced by such bands like Tower of Power and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Saturday, Feb 18 – DJ Logan Bay, The Hula Honeys
Resident DJ Logan Bay, who has lived and played extensively in the Far East, will be hosting Passport Control (a rather politically timely name to be sure) featuring Thai, tropical and world jams and a selection of hot beats from hotter climates. Adding to these sizzling sounds will be “The Hula Honeys”, our red-hot dance troupe who will lead the audience into the highly charged and fever-driven gyrations of the tropics.
Sunday, Feb 19 – King Kona Karaoke
You can test out your musical skills as an island-bound ballad crooner and imagine yourself down by the shack by the sea with our dapper master of ceremonies King Kona. So whether it’s Tiny Bubbles and Pearly Shells or I Will Survive and Purple Rain this is your time to shine and be The Voice (at least on this balmy night in Bridgeport).
Tuesday, Feb 21 – Sprinkles – Bossa Nova Night with DJ Tossanova
Calling all girls from Ipanema! Fly down with us to sunny and sensuous Rio for an evening of Brazilian Bossa Nova beats with DJ Tossanova and immerse yourself into the Carnival atmosphere of hedonism and riotous rhythms. DJ Tossanova will showcase the unique and original musical styles of Brazil such as Samba, Bossa Nova, MPB, Tropicalia, Choro, Lambada and Funk Carioca. As Jorge Ben sings in Pais Tropical, “I live in a tropical country blessed by God, And beautiful by nature, what a beauty, In February (in February), It has carnival (it has carnival)”
Also, as a special additional treat we will be serving some soft served ice cream concocted by Chef Tony.
Thursday, Feb 23 – Limbo Contest featuring DJ Trader Joe Bryl
“Jack be limbo, Jack be quick, Jack go unda limbo stick, All around the limbo clock, Hey, let’s do the limbo rock, Limbo lower now, Limbo lower now, How low can you go?”
See how “low you can go” in our Limbo contest and test out your fire down below. DJ Trader Joe Bryl will be digging into his collection of rare Limbo, Calypso, Steel Band, Latin and Brazilian records from many years deep diggin’ and unearth these treasures as our contestants compete in a classic Limbo contest seeing who is the most limber. Made popular during the fifties, the Limbo became an over-night craze and is the traditional national dance of Trinidad and Tobago.
As a spicy addition to the flavor of the Hot Tropics festivities, Kimski will have pan Asian themed specials all week long.
