You can make your mark on Saturday, Oct 29 between 5–9 PM when Maria’s with New Belgium Brewery will be presenting a Pumpkin Carving Night. Carving tools and pumpkins provided (no purchase necessary) for you to whittle away the hours. We also will be featuring some tasty autumnal beers that are perfect for the fall season.

Tappings include:

Pumpkick: What’s that bite of tartness doing in a pumpkin beer? Adding the unexpected kick of cranberry juice to brighten this traditionally spiced seasonal ale. Pumpkick is brewed with plenty of pumpkin juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, but it’s the cranberries and touch of lemongrass that send your taste buds sailing. Available in August-October 2016.

Le Terroir: Le Terroir: French, meaning ‘from the terrain, soil, land, ground, earth.’ You may have heard it as a wine term speaking of the environmental conditions of the vineyard, the pH of the soil, even the slope of the land. But beer has it too, especially a New Belgium sour beer, which oozes terroir from the pores of the wooden foeders we age it in. Le Terroir is a complex blend of sour Felix, and then dry-hopped with Amarillo and, for 2016, Crystal hops. The result is a fruity, citrusy, winelike drink with a huge hop nose.

Hop Kitchen Bretta IPA: Follow the rules, keep on the straight and narrow, play it safe—isn’t it time you shook things up a bit? Life’s too exotic to stick to the familiar, so hop on the wild side with Bretta IPA. This Hop Kitchen release dares to cross wickedly wild Brettanomyces yeast with some of our favorite fruity hop varieties. Conditioned on two strains of Brettanomyces for a month, the IPA’s citrusy, piney hop notes courtesy of Equinox, Galaxy and Warrior riff off the yeast’s pineapple flavors, while rustic undertones emphasize a wild streak. Bring the funk and mix it up with Bretta IPA.

Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale: To craft this confection, we dove into our favorite chocolate chip cookie recipes for inspiration, and then whipped hefty doses of chocolate, brown sugar and vanilla into a dough-hued blonde ale base. The result is a full-bodied beer that seduces with a perfect balance of vanilla and chocolate, and finishes with just the right amount of sweetness. Put down the spoon, pick up a pint.

With the change of the season so comes changes in drink habits. On these crisp nights that beckon for darker and maltier beers to warm us up from the autumnal chill we move to heavier, heartier and spicier brews. Whether one’s huddling around a campfire, pre-gaming for a trip to the pumpkin patch or relaxing with friends at Maria’s, we’re teaming up with Avery Brewing onThursday, Oct. 27 (5-9 PM) for a Seasonal Specialties Tapping to savor some toasty brews that bring the essence of fall festivities to life.

A monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. 18% ABV

Bourbon barrel-aging that adds layers of complexity to an already exquisitely spiced pumpkin porter. 15% ABV

The Kaiser
Gorgeous, deep copper sheen, massive malty backbone and spicy, floral, pungent Noble hops – then intensified each into this, an Imperial Oktoberfest. 9% ABV

Vanilla Bean Stout
A double dose of vanilla derived from both fresh Bourbon barrels and the trio of Tongan, Ugandan, and Mexican whole vanilla beans is complemented by essences of chocolate, caramel and molasses to round out this luxuriously silky stout. 10.8% ABV

Aug 12: Half Acre/ Marz Release Omnolith, a beer for Lumpen Magazine’s 25th

omnolith A.J. Liebling once said: that the ‘freedom of the press belongs to those who own one.’ So it’s a good thing we do. – Ed Marszewski, Publisher of Lumpen Magazine Lumpen is a long running magazine that chronicles the countercultures. The scathing and hilarious arts culture and politics magazine has been recognized and celebrated for its editorial that is poignant and thought-provoking to marginalized and irreverent. For 25 years Lumpen has been a champion of independent culture showcasing the literary  and visual arts, culinary culture, innovative music, start up businesses, progressive politics and irreverent humor. We started with Lumpen magazine, branched out to the web, started more publications, events, festivals and now, an FM radio station for the City of Chicago on the dial at 105.5fm To celebrate and mark the 25th anniversary of Lumpen Magazine, fellow arts and culture supporters Gabriel Magliaro and Matt Gallagher, of Half Acre beer collaborated with Lead Brewer Tim Lange and Lumpen publisher, Ed Marszewski of Marz Community Brewing, to brew an Imperial Red Lager, with an ABV of 7.5%. In poking fun at the left wing publication, Magliaro suggested that. “It could be fun to bend the name of the beer around the idea of a giant, all encompassing organization that aims to pull the life from anything pure and successful.” and suggested the name of the beer Omnolith. It was unanimously endorsed by all. This is the second time Half Acre has made a commemorative beer for Lumpen . On it’s 20th anniversary in 2011, Half Acre brewed the Imperial Red Ale called The Chairman and that experience probably foolishly inspired the Lumpens to get into brewing. To bring the collaboration to another level the design of the label was worked on by both breweries’ lead designers. Phineas Jones, from Half Acre worked with Marz Community Brewing’s Creative Director, Michael Freimuth, to capture the spirit of Lumpen’s Omnolithic irreverence by using inspiration from the  architecture of brutalist east european monuments. By examining the shapes and geometry of those 60’s era structures the two were able to design a simple minimalist icon to adorn the label. On Friday August 12, Omnolith will be released at Half Acre Brewing’s Lincoln Brewing facility at 11 am. Lumpen Magazine will be giving away various back issues of the publications at the bottle release event. That night Lumpen will take over Maria’s Package Goods and Community Bar (960 W 31st St) for the south-side bottle release and celebration. Starting at 5pm , attendees can either get a bottle to go or enjoy a draft pour in the bar. Kimski will be creating a special to pair with the beer and  More back issue of the Lumpen magazine will be given away.

Help Build a New Community Radio Station

Captura-de-pantalla-2016-07-05-a-las-7.03 Many Maria’s fans might be aware that we support many of the projects produced and facilitated by local non profit, Public Media Institute. They publish Lumpen Magazine, Mash Tun Journal and run the rad art space, Co-Prosperity Sphere. We are also involved with underwriting their newest and most ambitious media project, Lumpen Radio. Lumpen Radio is a new community radio station that can reach over 2.3 million potential listeners daily.  It is based down the block from Maria’s and we think it will become  an amazing addition to the rich cultural life of our neighborhood and the city. Lumpen Radio is  very close to getting the station on the air but it needs additional financial support. They have launched a Summer Swag-A-Thon where you can buy T-shirts, mugs, pint glasses and more, with all of the proceeds going towards paying their radio tower site construction fees. Sunday June 12, 2-7pm: Jefee’s Pizzeria Does a Pop Up at Kimski!

IMG_2700 Anthony Caccitolo has revived his family’s pizza tradition and now makes them for friends and family. Now YOU will have the chance to try the original Jefee’s pizza at Kimski / Maria’s on Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 2-7pm. This is one of a kind pizza you can’t find anywhere else! Due to our kitchen restraints there are very limited pies available. The pizza is one size: 14” ( feeds two adults ) Each pizza will be $20 plus $2 for additional topping ( sausage, peppers, mushrooms, onions, pepperoni ) Or ask for the KoPo pizza ( a special kimchee polish sausage concoction). To be sure you will receive your pizza without a long wait please email us and order in advance. There are only 40 pies available for “advanced no wait reservations ” So, let us know: 1. The the quantity of pizzas you want (with toppings). 2. The time you want to pick them up ( or eat at Kimski) We will email you back to see if we can accommodate your request and /or give an optional time to pick it up.
